Spotlight on the Extremists

...An article in the Palestinian Arab newspaper Al Manar on May 3 asserted: "Nobody in the West dares to stand up, when the subject is the fictitious Nazi Holocaust against the Jews of Europe. Since the end of World War II, the victors have imposed their hegemony over history, and forged the legend of the Holocaust to extort the entire world, using the face of the ugly Nazi. They planted a thorn in the side of defeated Germany to extort it forever"...

...In the May 17 New Republic, Hillel Halkin reported that longtime Palestinian Arab spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi "believes the Palestinians have what it takes to democratize in an Arab world notoriously unable to do so. 'Our baptism of fire was the intifada,' she says..." Ashrawi neglected to acknowledge that a significant part of the intifada consisted of Yasir Arafat's death squads murdering more than 800 fellow-Arabs during 1989-1992. Many of the victims were targeted as a result of personal or political rivalries, clan wars, or were accused of 'moral offenses' such as drug use or extramarital affairsalthough the PLO leadership sought to mask the murders by claiming the killers were targeting those who had "collaborated" with Israel. Ashrawi herself was one of those who tried to excuse the murders. On the MacNeil Lehrer News Hour (November 23, 1992), Ashrawi asserted that criticism of the death squads' activity was "a serious misunderstanding and a deliberate misrepresentation" of the killers. "The issue of violence against collaborators is a very ticklish issue, and we should try to deal with it in a serious and responsible manner rather than just dismiss it as an act of violence....We are, after all, a democratic society."...

...In a recent lecture at Temple De Hirsch Sinai, a Reform congregation in Seattle, Alan Solomonow, an official of the Quakers' foreign policy arm, the American Friends Service Committee, urged Israel to make a variety of territorial concessions, including the internationalization of Jerusalem, in order to achieve peace. Audience members, who might have wondered whether or not Solomonow truly has Israel's best interests at heart when giving such advice, would be interested to learn that before he worked for the Quakers, Solomonow was executive director of a group called the Committee on New Alternatives in the Middle East (CONAME). During the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Solomonow and CONAME publicly urged the United States to stop sending weapons to Israel...

Arab refugees) was Phase 2 of the Oslo Accords and the basis for all future negotiations. While this is indeed a serious event, one wonders why suddenly everyone seems surprised. Autonomy, as envisioned and promised by Begin, was the blueprint for Palestinian statehood. Oslo is the blueprint for resolutions 181 and 194 -- the borders of the 1947 partition plan and even in them an overwhelming number of Arabs, i.e. the total elimination of Israel.

Among Israel's American friends are commentators, writers and journalists who have become quite critical of the American administration and of Israel's pacifists and defeatists. They are increasingly critical of Arafat and the PLO's flagrant violations and murderous pronouncements. They are alarmed by the escalation of Arab threats and incitement to war. They denounce Resolution 181 and 194 and the effort to wrest Jerusalem from Israel. But, just as they could not bear to contemplate annexation, they still cannot bring themselves to an unambiguous admission that Oslo was, is, and will be Israel's undoing.
