...The recent essay by Edward Said in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, urging that Israel be replaced by a binational, secular "Palestine," was the brainchild of the Sunday Magazine's deputy editor, Harry Shapiro, Said has revealed. Speaking at a conference organized by the Sabeel Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem, Said said Shapiro called him one day, to say that while he had once been a supporter of Israel, "Quite frankly, I think the whole thing has failed." Said noted that Shapiro's words were "a significant admission for someone like him to make." Shapiro asked Said to submit an article describing Said's idea for a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
