Spotlight on the Extremists

...Former Congressman Paul McCloskey is known as an extreme critic of Israel, but he appears to have sunk to a new low: he has added his name to the roster of "Friends of The Spotlight and Liberty Lobby," the fundraising arm for the anti-Semitic Liberty Lobby organization and its Holocaust-denying newspaper. Also on the "Friends" list, alongside McCloskey, is Jerome Brentar of Cleveland, who was forced to resign from George Bush's 1988 presidential campaign when it was revealed that he has been active in Holocaust-denial groups, including the infamous Institute for Historical Review...

...The recent 16th annual convention of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, held in Arlington, Virginia, featured the usual array of Israel-bashing speakers: Edward Said, Casey Kasem, Congressman David Bonior, and the like. Several interesting additions to the roster: CBS-TV correspondent Mike Wallace was one of the speakers, and Laurie Goodstein of the New York Times and film critic Roger Ebert were presented with awards...

..."Sanctions Are Weapons of Mass Destruction" was the headline of a recent advertisement in the New York Times and The Progressive by Iraq's American friends. The ad, denouncing the U.S. sanctions against Saddam Hussein, was signed by leftover 1960s radicals Angela Davis and Bobby Seale, radical-left standard-bearers such as Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn, and a few mild surprises--Michael Lerner's chum Cornel West, author Kurt Vonnegut, and Auxiliary Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton of Detroit...

...President Clinton's decision to refrain from moving America's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was heartily applauded by James Zogby, which complained that "Congress has been attempting to bully the Administration"...

...Israel's recent counter-terror strikes in Lebanon were "nothing short of state-sponsored terrorism," announced Khalil Jahshan, president of the National Association of Arab-Americans...

...House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt is a "Quisling," according to an article in the Jordan Times on July 21, by one George Hismeh. Gephardt deserves the eptithet, according to Hismeh, because he cancelled the nomination of Salam al-Marayati to the U.S. Commission on Terrorism, after learning of al-Marayati's record of pro-terrorist statements. We wonder what Gephardt, a staunch supporter of the Clinton administration's policy of giving aid to Jordan, thinks of the fact that a Jordanian government newspaper published such a characterization of him...

...The recent essay by Edward Said in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, urging that Israel be replaced by a binational, secular "Palestine," was the brainchild of the Sunday Magazine's deputy editor, Harry Shapiro, Said has revealed. Speaking at a conference organized by the Sabeel Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem, Said said Shapiro called him one day, to say that while he had once been a supporter of Israel, "Quite frankly, I think the whole thing has failed." Said noted that Shapiro's words were "a significant admission for someone like him to make." Shapiro asked Said to submit an article describing Said's idea for a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict. Said's article, "The One-State Solution," appeared in the Times "unchanged," Said told the Jerusalem gathering...

...Fresh on the heels of President Clinton's remark comparing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak to "a new toy," a "U.S. official" --often a euphemism for Martin Indyk or Dennis Ross-- told the Jerusalem Post on August 4 that the Clinton administration "doesn't want to be pulled back into babysitting the squabbling sides." Does the administration ever use such condescending language when referring to any other countries?...
