Spotlight on the Extremists

...Imad Awadallah and Adel Awadallah were two of the top bomb-makers in Hamas, but that does not mean they were necessarily terrorists, according to the National Association for Arab-Americans. A recent NAAA news release mentioned that "Israel sealed its border after assassinating two brothers [the Awadallahs] it called 'terrorist'"...

...The pro-Saddam sentiment among grassroots Arabs is Israel's fault, claims Arab-American lobbyist James Zogby in a recent Jordan Times op-ed. "There is a connection between the failing peace process, the obstructionism of the Likud government, and the mood of [pro-Saddam] anger and alienation that has clouded and captured the minds of many," Zogby wrote. No explanation from Zogby as to why there was similar pro-Saddam sentiment long before there was a "peace process," and why that sentiment continued whether Labor or Likud was in power in Israel...

...After the Houston Chronicle recently published an editorial containing sympathetic references to former Prisoner of Zion Natan Sharansky, local members of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee members met with the newspapers' editorial page editors, David Langworthy and Fred Michel. They invited Langworthy and Michel to a party at the local Arab American Community Center, where they "enjoyed an evening of fun, food and dance with local Americans," according to the ADC. The ADC also submitted an op-ed by "Palestinian human rights advocate" Eyad Sarraj, which Langworthy and Michel promptly published...

...Israel's refusal to release imprisoned Arab terrorists involved in murders is actually part of a secret plan by the Netanyahu government to undermine the Wye accords, claims Palestinian Legislative Council member Husam Khader in the January/February issue of the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs. "Bibi wants the Palestinians to protest--which we are--and reject the accords, which many do, so then he can dump them all together--which he wants to do," Khader asserts. "That's enough incentive right there for Netanyahu to release the prisoners"...

...Speaking at an Ottawa conference organized by the Canadian branch of the pro-Arab group "Friends of Sabeel," author Rosemary Ruether declared that "the Jewish Zionist establishment in North America especially" has succeeded in "silencing Western Christians in regard to Palestinian human and civil rights"...

Christians Flee the Middle East

(Continued from p.2)

When the frail, 60 year old Coptic Bishop Wissa protested, he was arrested, charged with fomenting sectarian strife. A five count indictment against him includes a charge of threatening national security, which carries the death penalty.

The Globe quotes the director of a Coptic ad-
vocacy group called Egyptian Human Rights for National Unity. "Those who can afford to, have left the country."

The same is true for Lebanon. At least 600,000 Christians have left the country. The best estimates are that one million Christians remain, 25% of the country. In the early 1970s, Christians were a 60% majority. The Globe notes, "Once a clear majority fully in charge of a wealthy country, the Christians of Lebanon have become an embattled minority fearful of the future."
