SPOTLIGHT ON
THE EXTREMISTS

...Tikkun editor Michael Lerner has admitted that he has authored many of the letters that have appeared in the Tikkun letters column, under false names--some of which heaped praise on Lerner's signed articles. Lerner's former assistant editor, Chris Lehmann, exposed Lerner's fraudulent practice in the March issue of Harper's. Lehmann noted that "Michael has this elaborate story about how the tragically inarticulate Tikkun readership can't get it together to write their own letters. That strikes me as an insult to his readers, who I am sure are among the most educated in the country." Lehmann said his appeals to Lerner to stop manufacturing letters were ignored. Tikkun's former executive editor, Alice Chasan --who now works for the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists--confirmed that she complained to Lerner "many times" about the letter fraud during her four and a half years at Tikkun, but to no avail.

When asked by the Washington Post about Lehman's accusation, Lerner first replied "I never created a letter. It's a straightforwardly false claim." Then Lerner proceeded to explain that, in fact, he did create numerous letters on the basis of conversations with individuals who, he claims, were unwilling or unable to write their own letters. Lerner confessed to the Post that he is "a tainted and limited and partly distorted human being"...

...Former Peace Now activist Gilad Haymann blasted his old friends in a recent Ha'aretz article, calling Peace Now "a small extremist movement which does not act today out of concern for Israeli interests but rather from an almost blind indentification with the Palestinians...Peace Now has turned into a movement that consistently represents the Palestinian position, so much so that even many of its members--who are full of self-hate towards everyone who represents their state--'understand' the need to use violence and attacks in order to fight the Netanyahu government."

In a follow up interview with IMRA, Haymann said: "Peace Now has taken the attitude of not being concerned with the needs of Israel while maintaining that the Palestinians can do no wrong. Consider, for example, that after the bombing of the Tel Aviv cafe, poet Daliah Ravikovitch was on the Popolitika TV show and she started talking about Baruch Goldstein and the Hebron massacre when the discussion was about the Tel Aviv bombing. But what the terrorist did was just as serious as Goldstein. The Palestinians may need help, but they are the other side. What troubles me is the euphoria, excitement and support for Faisal Husseini when he came up to talk at the rally at Har Homa the day of the Tel Aviv bombing. [Peace Now leader] Tsali Reshef spoke before him and did not get much applause, but Husseini did...When you carry out negotiations with the Arabs, it should be discussion, not identification"...

A MATTER
OF PRIORITIES

Labor Zionism and the
Plight of Soviet Jewry, 1917-1996

by Prof. Geoffrey Martin
and Natan Herzl

This meticulously documented expose reveals the Labor Party's history of ignoring and even sabotaging the struggle for Soviet Jewish freedom. Some observers believe that A Matter of Priorities helped turn significant numbers of Russian-born Israeli voters against the Labor Party in the 1996 election.
