SPOTLIGHT ON THE EXTREMISTS
...Two leftwing Jewish groups, Nishma and the Israel Policy Forum, have merged. Forum director Jonathan Jacoby, formerly of New Jewish Agenda and Americans for Peace Now, will head the new group's New York office. Nishma director Thomas Smerling, formerly head of the New Jewish Agenda's Minnesota division, will head the new group's Washington office...
...New Republic editor Martin Peretz recently criticized University of Pennsyvania professor Ian Lustick, a veteran Peace Now supporter, for writing (in Lustick's recent book, Unsettled States, Disputed Lands) that the violence common in modern Algeria is the fault of the French colonial regime that ruled there before the 1960s.
Lustick's book also praised the extremist Algerian revolutionaries who fought against the French for their "impressive national solidarity." Peretz, in his criticism of Lustick, mentioned that Lustick is "a leftwing Jew." Lustick replied with a stinging letter to the editor, denying that he is an apologist for the Algerian revolutionaries, calling Peretz "anti-Semitic," and accusing Peretz of "Jew-baiting."
Peretz, in his response, noted that Lustick's book "is a very big book, indeed. If he thought that the murderous ways--Lustick delicately calls them 'violent tendencies'--of the [Algerian revolutionaries] are at all responsible" for today's violence in Algeria, "he certainly had an opportunity to say so. He chose not to."
...Chewing gum exported to Palestinian Arab areas by Israel "contains a sexually-stimulating adrenaline substance," according to Saleh Abdulal, Inspection Department director for the Palestinian Authority's Supplies Ministry...Abdulal's claim follows the recent allegation by another PLO official that Israel has injected hundreds of Palestinian Arab children with the AIDS virus. No condemnation or disavowal from Chairman Arafat...
...Meanwhile, "moderate" PLO cabinet minister Hanan Ashrawi attacked the Clinton administration for expressing its disapproval of the murder of Arabs who sold land to the Jews. Ashrawi told Agence France Presse the U.S. should focuson the fact that Israel "was erected on land stolen from the Palestinians in 1948"...
...Pro-Arab groups in the United States have launched a campaign demanding the establishment of a "U.S. Embassy to Palestine" in the eastern part of Jerusalem. The Council for the National Interest (one of whose leaders is former Senator George McGovern) and the Jerusalem Fund are spearheading the campaign,
along with veteran Israel-basher Paul Findley, a former Congressma, and Rep. James Moran (D-VA). Critics point out that the American Consulate in Jerusalem, which is located in an Arab neighborhood and staffed almost entirely by Arabs, has been functioning as a de-facto "Embassy to Palestine" for many years now...

A MATTER OF PRIORITIES
Labor Zionism and the
Plight of Soviet Jewry, 1917-1996
by Prof. Geoffrey Martin
and Natan Herzl
This meticulously documented expose reveals the Labor Party's history of ignoring and even sabotaging the struggle for Soviet Jewish freedom. Some observers believe that A Matter of Priorities helped turn significant numbers of Russian-born Israeli voters against the Labor Party in the 1996 election.
