Spotlight on

the Extremists

...The "moderate" American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) has denounced the State Department for releasing a list of terrorist groups, which American citizens are barred from assisting. The ADC's statement repeatedly referred to the terrorist groups as "terrorist groups," implying that it does not regard those groups --such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad-- as terrorists. The ADC claimed that the release of the State Department's list will lead to "a xenophobic witch hunt"...

...Another "moderate" Arab-American, James Zogby of the Arab-American Institute, has described the Israeli assassination attempt against a Hamas leader in Jordan as "the recent Mossad terrorist attack against a Hamas leader"...

...The World Methodist Council is sending a "work-study team" of 24 Methodists to "stand in solidarity with Bethlehem" for two weeks. Bonnie Jones Gehweiler of Lexington, Kentucky, who heads the Council's "Bethlehem 2000 Task Force," is leading the mission. She says that Israel "is trying to drive Palestinian Christians from Bethlehem through economic tactics --an apparent reference to the curfew that Israel briefly imposed on Bethlehem after the September 4 bombing in Jerusalem, in order to catch the bombers, who were being sheltered in Bethlehem. No word from Gehweiler concerning the Muslim extremists who have frequently used violence against Bethlehem Christians to pressure them to move out...

...Jews should be prevented from getting any closer than "two meters away from the [Western] Wall," the Palestinian Authority's Minister of Waqf and Religious Affairs, Hassan Tahboob, declared in a recent interview with Independent Media Review & Analysis. Tahboob said that the Western Wall is actually "the Al Baraq Wall," and "it is part of the Al Aqsa Mosque of course"...

Openly pleading for more U.S. pressure on Israel, Peace Now leader Galia Golan, writing in the November-December issue of Tikkun, asserted: "We had high hopes for Secretary of State Albright's visit; we didn't expect American intervention to come, instead, in the form of Irving Moskowitz. We still, however, look to America for help. Hussein, Mubarak, Arafat, King Hassan of Morocco, Assad, none of these leaders can seem to get through to Bibi. But it has been proven that President Clinton can..." Two years ago, when American and Israeli opponents of Arafat sought Congressional intervention --not against the Israeli Labor government, but against U.S. aid to the PLO-- the Jewish left denounced them for seeking inappropriate American intervention in Mideast affairs...

A MATTER

OF PRIORITIES

Labor Zionism and the

Plight of Soviet Jewry, 1917-1996

by Prof. Geoffrey Martin and Natan Herzl

This meticulously documented expose reveals the Labor Party's history of ignoring and even sabotaging the struggle for Soviet Jewish freedom. Some observers believe that A Matter of Priorities helped turn significant numbers of Russian-born Israeli voters against the Labor Party in the 1996 election.
