SPOTLIGHT ON THE EXTREMISTS
...The American Jewish Congress has a new executive director for its Southern California region: Carol Levy, who boasts "a consistent commitment to progressive causes, from supporting migrant farm workers to Peace Now." As a student at UCLA in the 1960s, Levy gained notoriety after she lay down in the middle of Wilshire Boulevard, a major Los Angeles street, to protest American involvement in the Vietnam War. Levy is married to Reform rabbi Richard Levy who, during the 1970s, was active in Breira, the first U.S. Jewish group to call for creating a PLO state in Judea and Samaria...
...In his post-election analysis, leftwing journalist Walter Ruby, writing in P.S., admits that the failure of the Oslo accords was due in part to "the mendacious and manipulative manner in which Rabin and Peres sought to sell their agreements with the Palestinians to the Israeli public. Instead of honestly owning up to the reality that Oslo would lead within a few years to a demilitarized Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital and that most of the Jewish settlements in the territories would have to be removed, the Israeli leadership pretended until late in the game that it opposed a Palestinian state..."
...Comparing the terrorist attack on the Federal Building in Oklahoma City to the accidental Israeli shelling of a Lebanese Arab shelter during a legitimate self-defense operation, Arab-American activist Jack Shaheen, formerly professor of mass communications at Southern Illinois University, has called on the American media to "remember both Oklahoma City and Qana." Meanwhile, New Jewish Agenda activist Rachelle Marshall, in a letter to the New York Times, cited the accidental shelling of Qana as proof "of the conviction on the part of many Israelis that other people's lives don't count as much as theirs"...
...The latest annual report of the New Israel Fund reveals that the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), which provides legal aid to Arab terrorist suspects, continues to receive the Fund's largest single annual grant, $528,383. A distant second is the "Jewish-Arab Center for Economic Development," which, despite its name, does not assist both Jewish and Arab development but rather is a vehicle for Jews to aid Arabs; it received $257,578 from the New Israel Fund last year...
...Wendy Orange, Tikkun's correspondent in Israel, has written a soon-to-be-published book about "her experience among Palestinians and Israelis" during recent years. A sample of her approach may be gleaned from her dispatch in the summer issue of Tikkun, in which Orange reports: "Most Palestinians I've met sweeten loneliness. They emanate the kind of sad that knows that you're sad too, whoever you are"...

A MATTER OF PRIORITIES
Labor Zionism and the
Plight of Soviet Jewry, 1917-1996
by Prof. Geoffrey Martin
and Natan Herzl
This meticulously documented expose reveals the Labor Party's history of ignoring and even sabotaging the struggle for Soviet Jewish freedom. Some observers believe that A Matter of Priorities helped turn significant numbers of Russian-born Israeli voters against the Labor Party in this year's election.
