SPOTLIGHT ON
THE EXTREMISTS

...Marc Ellis, the self-proclaimed "Jewish liberation theologian," has his own peculiar interpretation of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. Writing in the latest issue of Israel and Palestine, Ellis asserts that the Jewish right is frightened "over the possibility that the era of Auschwitz, an era which features the attempted annihilation of the Jewish people and the displacement of the Palestinian people, may come to an end." Therefore, Ellis argues, the assassination "represents the need to continue Auschwitz as a shield of protection for Jews and the expansion of the Israeli state"...

...Edward Said's Israel-bashing in the pages of The Nation has become so extreme that even some prominent voices on the Jewish left are uncomfortable. Said's declaration that Hamas and Islamic Jihad are "part of the continuing protest and should be understood as such" outraged Ralph Seliger, longtime editor of the Mapam journal Israel Horizons. Writing in the far-left monthly Jewish Currents, Seliger denounces Said as "pernicious," "tendentious" and "ethnocentric." He blasts Said's demand for Israeli surrender of "East Jerusalem" to the PLO, noting that Said ignores "the virtual destruction of the Jewish Quarter, and the wholesale expulsion and exclusion of Jews from the Western Wall by force of arms until the fortunes of war were reversed in June, 1967"...

...Veteran Labor Party activist Susan Hatis Rolef writes regularly on the op-ed page of the Jerusalem Post, defending the Oslo accords and Israeli concessions to the PLO. But when Rolef suggested in a recent column that Israel had to combat terrorism in order to facilitate the Oslo process, one of Rolef's Arab friends turned on her with a vengeance. PLO supporter Hania Bitar, writing in the Arab weekly Jerusalem Times, accused Rolef of advocating "mass liquidation" of Arabs. "None of the nations of the world is more sensitive to words than the Israelis," Bitar concluded. "You are the fastest to describe anything as anti-Semitic. So enough of your anti-Palestinian semantics and do not join the club of Rafael Eitan with his Arabs=cockroaches"...

...The leftwing professor Alon Ben-Meir, who was once regarded as a centrist, has drifted further and further to the left in recent years. Now he has stooped to writing for one of the most anti-Israel journals in the United States, the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs. In its February-March issue, Ben-Meir denounces the assassination of Hamas bomb-maker Yahya Ayyash, presumably by Israeli agents, as "untimely and unwise" because "it disillusioned many moderate Hamas members in the territories who were willing to give peace a chance"...

...The Peres government's policy of closing off the territories and demolishing a few terrorists' homes is "Nazi in philosophy," according to Dr. Arthur Hertzberg, speaking on the New York Jewish radio show "Talkline"...
