SPOTLIGHT ON THE EXTREMISTS
...At a recent Congressional hearing, Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ) asked PLO representative Hassan Abdul Rahman why the PLO had not done a house-to-house search for illegal weapons in Gaza after the Hamas suicide bombings. Rahman replied: "Did you do that in Oklahoma City?" The Congressman should have pointed out that there are at least 26,000 illegal weapons in Gaza; does Rahman believe there is a comparable number in Oklahoma City?...
"We have not only two political blocs, but two cultures, and in reality two separate nations," declared leftwing activist Uri Avnery after the recent Israeli election. He said Israel is divided between "Jews," whose "historical memory is that of an oppressed minority," and "Israelis," who are "aware of their Jewish roots the way Americans, Canadians and Australians are aware of Anglo-Saxon roots, but they are part of modern culture"...
...Peace Now spokesman Mossy Raz says that his movement will take action against Jews who purchase homes in mostly-Arab areas, even if such purchases are perfectly legal. "The question is not a legal one," Raz told the Israeli daily Ha'aretz. "We are talking about a systematic takeover of houses by settlers in the heart of the Palestinian population"...
...The Arabs were right to be angry when President Clinton spoke sympathetically about Israeli victims of the Hamas suicide-bombs, writes Wendy Orange, Mideast correspondent for the leftwing journal Tikkun, in its May-June issue. "If I were Palestinian, I would be angry, too: We Jews are not the only victims here"...
...Meanwhile, Tikkun editor Michael Lerner responded to the Israeli election results by declaring that "the U.S. should use its power to pressure Israel." Lerner also predicted that the policies of the new government will alienate young American Jews from Judaism, claiming that "in the research I conducted"--he did not explain when, where or why--"on the alienation of younger Jews from the institutions of Jewish life," the second most common reason for such alienation was "the repression of dissent about Israel." No comment from Lerner on the fact that "dissent" about Israel--he is referring to public attacks on Israel by Jewish leftists--has been going on since the early 1970s, with much of it directed by Lerner himself, who certainly has never been "repressed"...
...Newsday reports that billionaire Edgar Bronfman and veteran leftist Jonathan Jacoby (presently leader of the Labor-affiliated Israel Policy Forum, formerly prominent in New Jewish Agenda and Americans for Peace Now) held a series of parlor meetings prior to the Israeli elections to "help donors circumvent both Israeli and U.S. laws" that prohibit donations to Israeli political parties...
