SPOTLIGHT ON THE EXTREMISTS
...Marlene Adler Marks, managing editor of the Los Angeles Jewish Journal, says she agrees with radical-left Tikkun editor Michael Lerner on many issues, but she is troubled by Lerner's new book, The Politics of Meaning. The book is "disconnected from both politics and history...He has learned from the labor movement and the feminist movement but misses the lessons of his own [Jewish] tradition...While the Dalai Lama consults with Jews about how the Tibetan exiles can sustain community, Michael Lerner sees little in contemporary Jewish life worth bringing to others..."
Rotating leftists: David A. Harris, formerly Washington representative of the leftwing Israel Policy Forum, has been hired as the new Washington director of the American Jewish Congress. The position was previously held by Craig Sumberg, who worked for Tikkun and Americans for Peace Now before being hired by the American Jewish Congress...
...Ralph Seliger, longtime editor of the Mapam journal Israel Horizons, expected to find himself among friends when he addressed a panel on the Middle East at the recent Socialist Scholars Conference in New York, sponsored by the leftwing magazine Jewish Currents. Seliger made the mistake of referring to the fact that the Arabs are "blind to their share of responsibility" for the Arab-Israeli conflict. This sparked "a barrage of hostile questions and comments" from the Arabs and Jewish leftists in the audience--including accusations "that Zionists collaborated with the Nazis, were pro-British, seek borders from the Nile to the Euphrates, etc." Some in the audience questioned Seliger's right to speak at the conference, since he did not define himself as a strict socialist. Later, Seliger asked a fellow-panelist, Arab militant Maher Abdul-Qader, if he were a socialist. Seliger recalled: " 'No', came his unhesitant response. But nobody had even dreamed of asking him..."
...The Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, one of the most vicious anti-Israel publications in the United States today, has a new fan: Mark Perry, who claims to be a neutral historian and recently authored a book about the Arab-Israeli conflict called A Fire in Zion. The Washington Report wrote Perry for permission to reprint an article of his. Perry's response was so friendly that the editors ran it as the first letter in the letters column of their April issue. Perry gushed: "Don't be ridiculous. You can print any article of mine that you want, any time that you want, with or without my permission. If I had $1-million I would give it as a gift to the American Educational Trust [publisher of the Washington Report] and your fine magazine. Keep up the good work"...
