SPOTLIGHT ON
THE EXTREMISTS

...Leonard Fein and other members of a delegation from Americans for Peace Now recently traveled to Gaza for dinner with Yasser Arafat. In the Forward, Fein described the thrill of being seated next to the PLO leader who, he said, "cut some schnitzel from his own plate, put it on mine, encouraged me to taste it, and then motioned the waiter to bring me a fresh plate. I don't think I'd have been surprised if he'd said to me, 'Ess, ess mine kind.' Fein recalled that he had considered asking Arafat about his jihad speeches, his refusal to change the PLO's Covenant and his persecution of Arab dissidents, but decided not to because "Mr. Arafat's answers to my questions [would have been] irrelevant...The peace process goes forward and one does not have to find Mr. Arafat likeable in order to applaud the revolution that it brings, even now, to the lives of real people." Not to mention that such questions might have ruined their dinner...

...Most voices on the Jewish left speak enthusiastically about the possibility of joint Arab-Israeli economic ventures and Shimon Peres's vision of a "new Middle East." Not so Israeli historian Ilan Pappe, of Haifa University, a prominent leftwing "revisionist" historian whose writings seek to blame Israel for the Arab-Israeli conflct. Pappe told the Village Voice on January 23 that Peres's scheme "is not a new Middle East. It's neocolonialism"...

Reviewing a new book by Israel-basher Norman Finkelstein in the Village Voice, Noam Chomsky asserted: "That the U.S. and its Israeli partner have always sought peace is not in question. Everyone seeks peace, even Hitler, Stalin and Attila the Hun"...

There were actually "two assassinations of Yitzhak Rabin," claims Michael Lerner, editor of the radical-left Tikkun, in the January-February issue. "The first assassination was of his body"; the second was "an assassination of the meaning of his life and the meaning of his death," perpetrated by those American Jewish leaders who have failed "to mobilize American Jews to support the peace process"...

END OF ZIONISM

(Continued from p.8)

Jewish state. It argued that Israeli withdrawal would assure a Jewish state within the pre-1967 borders. Without this, they contended, the Zionist vision could not be achieved.

But it is the Israeli left that is the true enemy of Zionism and modern Jewish nationalism. A Green Line Jewish State, alongside a PLO state in Judea, Samaria and Gaza with eastern Jerusalem as its capital, will not

last. The secular Israeli left and "Palestinian Grand Strategy" will see to that. ×
