CULT OF PERSONALITY

Not the least of the bizarre ramifications of the Rabin assassination is the cult of personality that has developed around him.

According to an Associated Press report, "the grave at Mount Herzl has become a shrine, with bouquets of fresh flowers placed there daily. Updated versions of old Rabin biographies, CD-ROMs and books of photographs illustrating his life are snapped up in shops. Schools, roads and hospital wings are named after the late prime minister. Tens of thousands of cars still display the blue-and-white bumper sticker 'Shalom, Haver' --'Goodbye, friend,' President Clinton's last words to Rabin at his funeral...On sale in shops are a 190-page book of photographs, a collection of the wall graffiti from the Tel Aviv square where Rabin was shot, and a music disc of the songs sung at the fateful peace rally where he was slain." The AP report notes that, "the rituals of remembrance--lighting candles, singing peace songs--have some religious overtones and seem to fill a void for many secular Israelis." Israeli journalist Amnon Dankner admits, "We need saints, and Rabin is the last secular saint we have. So we need to idolize him."

Although there was always a strong secular, even anti-religious segment of Israeli society, its members had a belief system. There was socialism. There was Zionism. There was Socialist Zionism. Perhaps nothing better illustrates the death of all belief systems in post-Zionist Israel than the cult that has grown up around Rabin. It is reminiscent of the adulation given to Mao and Stalin in Communist societies, where religion is severely repressed.

But the Rabin cult has had yet another strange result. Author Tom Segev said, "The assassination not only gave us a hero, it also made the peace process something patriotic." In George Orwell's 1984, the Party had three slogans: "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength." In Israel, 1996, a fourth slogan has been added: "Betrayal is Patriotism." ×

THE LAW OF NO RETURN

In the February 8 issue of the Jerusalem Report, Hanoch Marmari, editor in chief of the pro-Labor government daily Ha'aretz, argues that the Law of Return, which guarantees entry to all Jews, "appears out of step with changing circumstances, " and is no longer needed. "As the peace process moves toward completion, it will grow harder for Israel to retain the Law of Return. When full peace is reached, the law, like Zionism, will have achieved its purpose. Israel will then need a pragmatic immigration policy, based on the existing but dormant
naturalization law."

Thus, the post-Zionists' phased plan for the destruction of Israel as a Jewish State has entered its second stage. First, take away the Jews' land. Second, take away the Jews. ×

"ALLIES" OF HAMAS

Following a request from the "Palestinian Authority," Shimon Peres agreed to hand over the remains of the Hamas terrorists who perpetrated the suicide bombings in Ramat Gan, Netzarim, and Kfar Darom, which left scores of Israelis dead. According to Arutz 7 radio, Peres did this in spite of pleas from security officials that returning the terrorists' remains would encourage more suicidal attacks against Jews.

In Islamic tradition, fighters who die in a "holy war" can only enjoy the pleasures of the after-life if their bodies are properly interred. Intelligence reports verify that Israel's refusal to hand over the bodies has made it difficult for Islamic Jihad and Hamas to recruit new suicide bombers. As a result, Hamas pressured the "Palestinian Authority" to intervene and Arafat demanded that Peres return the remains. The bodies were received by the PA on Friday, February 9.

Several Labor ministers and prominent leftists, such as Amos Oz, have accused the Likud of collaboration with Hamas, since both are "opponents of the peace process." It should now become obvious that it is the Labor government that is, in reality, collaborating with Hamas. By returning the remains of Hamas terrorists, Labor has ensured a new generation of suicide bombers. ×
