SPOTLIGHT ON
THE EXTREMISTS

...Israel's Law of Return should be "reformed," says leftwing novelist A.B.Yehoshua, writing in the November-December issue of Tikkun. Instead of granting automatic citizenship to Jewish immigrants, Yehoshua proposes, there should be a "probational trial period of several years," during which the immigrant "would be required to demonstrate his or her understanding of what it means to be an Israeli"...

...Mordechai Bar-On, Israeli chair of the New Israel Fund, declared in the wake of the Rabin assassination that he will be raising money to promote "tolerance and dialogue among Jews." A worthy goal; but perhaps Bar-On should set the tone for the campaign by publicly retracting the article he wrote in the May 1989 issue of New Outlook, in which he justified the use of violence against Jews in the territories. Bar-On wrote that "not every act of violence on the part of the enemy is an act of terrorism...anyone who claims that the stone-throwing and Molotov cocktails which characterize the intifada are terrorism...places an obstacle in the path of the peace process" and that Arab violence aimed at Israelis who are part of the "regime of occupation" is "not an act of terrorism, but part of an ongoing struggle"...

...Leftwing polemicist Yehuda Lev, writing in the Rhode Island Jewish World and Los Angeles Jewish Journal, compared the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin to the killing of Labor Zionist official Chaim Arlosoroff in 1933. Lev neglected to mention that as he lay dying, Arlosoroff said his assassins were not Jews...that the Revisionist Zionist who was branded by Mrs. Arlosoroff as the actual killer was acquitted after he was found to have been addressing a meeting in a different part of Tel Aviv at the time of the murder...that the man whose anti-Labor writings allegedly "incited" the murder was acquitted after it was found that some of the evidence against him had been fabricated...and that in 1982, an Israeli Government Commission of Inquiry re-examined the Arlosoroff case and found no evidence that either the original suspects, or any other Jewish nationalists, killed Arlosoroff...

...Leftist journalist-turned-novelist Robert Rosenberg thinks that the Jerusalem 3000 celebrations are a form of "boosterism" that is "practically fetishist." Writing in the December issue of Moment, Rosenberg declares that "Tel Aviv is the spiritual center of the State of Israel," not Jerusalem. Rosenberg is still best known in Israel for his October 29, 1987 op-ed in the Jerusalem Post entitled "Why the Wall Street Crash is Good for Shamir," in which he speculated that then-Prime Minister Shamir was "probably delighted by the Wall Street Crash,"
