Israeli soldiers, they told him enforcing these provisions was "not a UN-USA responsibility." So much for international law, agreements and UN "observers" or enforcers. The Times thus ignored the diplomatic and military substrata of the entire episode, as well as the methods of the Arab-UN war of attrition against Israel. Like a lure drawing a vulnerable quarry on a false lead, the paper ignored the real story to focus on alleged divergences between Hamas and Islamic Jihad (in fact, distinctions without a difference). Mis-information on details supplanted facts on governing principles and major players, as usual. The staged photos (long a staple on CNN) were the least of it. And then, five days later, munitions and guns that got through those tunnels in previous weeks were used to murder Jewish motorists. A 70-year old man was beaten to death on a soccer field as a group of Palestinian naval police stood and watched.
One cannot expect the Times or similar major outlets to change their ways. At the most, lengthy and detailed exposures of their errors produce belated, vague and tiny apologies tucked away on an inside page. Readers with a thirst for truth will have to look elsewhere.
