"Root Causes" and Other Specious Theories

While the doves still control the air space over the ivy towers of our elite universities and certain precincts of the media, the hawks are soaring in America. There is a renewed patriotism and pride in our military, and continuing support for our war on terrorism. Our determination to hunt down terrorists is also contagious, as nations from Europe to Singapore are closing in on terrorist cells, their supporters, and their financial networks.

In Israel, it's the vultures that continue to fly. The treasonous Yossis (Sarid and Beilin) and the foreign minister Peres and their acolytes in Israel and America are working overtime, circling and tugging at the dead carcass of the "peace process." There is no carnage, no murder, no amount of blood spilled that will convince them that it's over. They are obsessed with the "root causes" of the conflict, a concept that encourages Israel's enemies and misinforms those who are neutral. This view, now parroted by Arabs who are incapable of even pronouncing the word Israel, holds that after World War II the Jews usurped Arab land and belongings, created a population of millions of "refugees" and systematically denied civil rights to a peaceful and passive minority. Furthermore, this population is "humiliated" by an "occupying" power, and must indulge in acts of terror against Israelis and their supporters. Since the events of September 11, this notion receives less emphasis (although the terror itself does not cease). Unfortunately, and in large part due to the airing of "root cause" lies by Israelis and American Jews, Israel's case continues to be misunderstood.

It bears repeating again and again that there was always a Jewish presence in Palestine; that Zionism and the desire to return to Jerusalem and Hebron long antedated the Holocaust; that Jewish pioneers purchased and redeemed a wasteland; that Jerusalem, including Christian and Jewish shrines, was abandoned and desecrated when controlled by Arabs; that the Arabs refused any compromise and any partition even though they would have received over 80% of Palestine; that Arab leaders, by inciting local populations against theJews, created refugees whom they abandoned and mistreated; that Arabs declared wars and perpetrated terror against Israel's population as well as against Jews and other civilians in every single continent; that Arabs rejected even irresponsibly generous offers from Israel; that their schoolbooks and clerics and broadcasts continue to preach primitive and violent hatred for Jews and Israel.

The real "root cause" of the Middle East conflict is the hatred that Arabs inculcate in successive genera-tions, not some specious grudge which is encouraged and embellished by pacifist apologists. It is perverse to justify murder and terrorism by invoking a "root cause."

One should recall that in both Europe and Amer-ica, there were pacifists and isolationists who believed that the root cause of Hitler's rise was the humiliating terms of Germany's surrender after World War One. These pacifists deterred an early and decisive response to the Nazis, which could have spared millions of victims in the war these peddlers of "root causes" made inevitable.

In the aftermath of World War II, Germany's Chancellor Adenauer understood that his first priority in rebuilding his country was to force the public to confront Germany's guilt, with no room for excuse or refuge in "root causes." There was to be no revisionism based on the destruction of Dresden or Cologne or Munich. There was to be no rewriting of the history of the rise of Hitler.

Most important, Konrad Adenauer recognized the imperative of deprogramming a whole generation of German youth, which had been brainwashed to accept atrocities, racism and barbarism. In fact, it is still against the law in Germany to publish any book that denies the Holocaust and German guilt for it. Germany today is a democracy and an ally of its former enemies. That is the great legacy of Adenauer.

It is Peres and his ilk who are the "root cause" of Israel's problems.

The end of the war with Japan also brought total surrender. General Douglas MacArthur, who was visionary in rebuilding a modern and prosperous Japan, also would brook nothing short of complete admission of guilt, notwithstanding America's first use of atomic weapons in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. He too understood the necessity of reprogramming the minds of a whole generation of Japanese youth taught hatred, racism and violence. MacArthur's enduring legacy is the alliance between modern Japan and the United States.

The legacy of Shimon Peres and his counterparts is the destruction of the State of Israel. Their mantra is the tired old cliche that there is no alternative to "peace" and no other "partner" for negotiations than Arafat. In fact, it is Peres and his ilk who are the "root cause" of Israel's problems.

There is an alternative to their reckless vision which leads Israel to a peace of the grave. It is an Israel built on strength, security, and deterrence. Negotiations that are conditioned on suicide are not negotiations. Partners who are criminal antagonists cannot be partners to anything, let alone one's destiny. Most important, a population that has been programmed to hate and kill must be controlled, defeated, and then reeducated.

It takes vision, determination, and leadership.
