less to the 1949 borders. They grant the PLO funds and arms. They withdraw unilaterally from Lebanon and offer Syria all of the Golan and chunks of pre-1967 Israel. And they do all this while singing "Let there be Peace" into a wooden microphone not connected to any speakers. One sees evidence of the "peace-making" cargo cult everywhere one goes in Israel. People believe that if they place bumper stickers on their cars that say peace is nice, this will bring down the great peace cargo metal bird from the heavens. They think that if they carve a wooden microphone of self-debasement and renunciation of national pride, this will earn them the gratitude of the magic cargo angels. The medicine men and witch doctors of the Knesset think that if they go through the mechanical rites of making concessions to the PLO and the rest of the Arab world, then this will magically produce the bounty.
Magic has replaced Jewish traditional faith and belief for most of those in the Oslo camp. The Polynesian savages kept running through the empty rite over and over. They believed that if the magic metal bird did not materialize it must be because they were performing some detail in the rite incorrectly. Oslo exactly. It is the Jiminy Cricket view of the Middle East conflict. If Jews simply wish upon their wishing star hard enough, if they simply tell themselves into the wooden mike how important peace is, the magic will occur. And if it has failed to occur to date, someone out there is not performing the magical rite properly or with sufficient devotion.
Without attributing Oslo to the belief in magic, it cannot be explained at all. Only in terms of their faith in magic can one understand the total disregard for empirical observation and reason by Israel's elites. One cannot build an airfield without first understanding the basics of aerodynamics and electricity. Airplanes based on faith in conjuring words do not fly. Oslo is based on disregard and ignorance of the basic physics of the Middle East. Oslo cannot fly.
Since the beginning of the Oslo process of Israeli auto-destruction, a central piece of the doctrine has always been the "Really Really Hard Threat" or RRHT for short. The argument went something like this: Yes, we Israeli leftists think the PLO and the Arabs are ready to make peace, but all of Oslo is a great natural experiment. We will give the Arabs a chance to prove their intentions and on the off chance that those intentions turn out to be treacherous, then we will take back the concessions we have made and punish them, clobber them, really really hard. The RRHT was supposed to apply to the Syrians, the Hizbollah, and first and foremost the PLO. Which leads us to conclude that the Israeli Left wants to defeat the PLO by forcing it to laugh itself to death.
The RRHT was never really credible. There were endless tests of the RRHT doctrine on the Lebanese border, where Hizbollah, at the behest of its Syrian puppet masters, would weekly violate all those "understandings" Israel thought it had, the very same ones for which the RRHT was supposed to be the whip that forces the Hizbollah to comply. We all know what happened.
In the fall of 1996, the PLO put the RRHT doctrine to its first real Oslo test, when the PLO organized and led a pogrom against Israeli Jews. In that pogrom,
Airplanes based on faith in conjuring words do not fly.
The Oslo process is based on disregard and ignorance of the basic physics of the Middle East. Oslo cannot fly.
Arafat ordered a pogrom and murdered Jews. The RRHT response? Meowing from the Israeli government, at the time led by Benjamin Netanhayu, with the Israeli Left cheering on the PLO and justifying the pogromchiks.
Having totally discredited the RRHT doctrine in the Tunnel Affair, no one in the world, certainly no Arabs, took it seriously thereafter, especially when the Lemming Left took power again in Israel. Week after week, Hizbullah could shell northern Israeli civilians, and the Israeli government would threaten to punish them really really hard, all the while preparing a unilateral withdrawal and surrender. There is always the danger that the Hizbollah and Syrians might not have taken Freshmen Psychology, and so Israel provides them with weekly Pavlovian reminders that the best way to deal with Israel is through violence and obstinacy; Israel always rewards violence against herself with unilateral concessions. It is the peaceful thing to do!!
Which brings us to the events of May and the PLO's newest pogrom and answer to Kristallnacht.
