Spotlight on the Extremists

... The anarchist rioters at the World Trade Organization gathering in Seattle in December were actually "modern Maccabees," according to Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun, writing in its January-February 2000 issue. The rioters "took up the modern banner of ancient guerrilla fighters." The Maccabees fought against "the massive Greek empire," while today's enemy is another "empire" of "fifty multinational corporations" that are oppressing the world. The rioting must have brought back fond memories for Lerner, who himself led radical-left riots at the University of Washington in Seattle in the 1960s...

...The disinterest of Israelis in Communism troubles Israeli leftwing journalist Haim Baram, who writes in a recent issue of Middle East International that "one of Israel's few endearing features is undoubtedly its now sadly fading Bolshevik tradition..the last May Day celebration, with the ritual hoisting of the Red Flag, took place as long ago as 1984...Few young Israelis enjoy the Soviet heroic songs so popular here in the first decade after the establishment of the state in 1948...Most immigrants from the old Soviet Union are suspicious of the Zionist left..."

..."Might Israel Have an Image Problem?" was the headline on a recent op-ed in the Jerusalem Post. The author urged the Israeli government to assemble "a first-class team of image makers who could put Israel's position in the best possible light before the broad American public." Incredibly, the author was Dov Zakheim, who as an official of the Reagan administration did everything he could to smear Israel's public image during the Lavi controversy. Determined to prevent Israel from developing its own jet fighter, the Lavi, Zakheim single-handedly led a crusade to persuade Congress and the public that Israel was mishandling the funds that the U.S. had contributed towards the Lavi project...

...Writing recently in the Jerusalem Post, leftwing historian Bernard Wasserstein declared that Israelis who resist the arguments put forward by the leftwing Israeli "new historians" are comparable to far-right Germans who for many years clung to the myth that Germany was the innocent victim in World War I. Wasserstein himself was a forerunner of the current "new historians"--his books in the early 1980s routinely referred to Palestinian Arab terrorists of the 1930s/1940s as "guerrillas" and the Jewish underground fighters of that era as "terrorists"...
